On another note: I cringe when I hear people equate coffee, tea and cola
drinks with some extrapolated commandment to avoid caffeine. Nowhere do I
see where the commandment is to abstain from caffeine. So I don't drink
decaffinated cola either.
This one is an ongoing struggle, isn't it :-) I have, or have had,
access to most of the conference talks and ensigns going back to the
early 1900's and searched them diligently. Many of the talks by the
presidency clearly stated that we are to avoid addictive substances,
and they made it clear that caffeine is an addictive substance. Can't
say that its a law appended to the ten commandments or anything, but
it has been stated and repeated on many occasions that caffeine is to
be avoided.
There is no way to "win" a WoW discussion :-) The WoW is a perfect
example of "I teach them correct principles, and they govern
themselves" I believe you can drink a pepsi, and say yes when asked if
you follow the WoW.
I also believe that the Lord knows our hearts, and would refer to
George Costanza as he tried to help Jerry pass a lie detector test. He
told Jerry, "As long as you believe its true, its not a lie" (or
something like that <g>) If you believe drinking a pepsi is wrong,
and yet say yes in the interview, you will have to answer for that
choice. Same holds if you truly don't consider it wrong.
The Lord knows who knows better, and who doesn't, and that is part of
our agency. Not everything in life, or the Gospel, is black and white,
since not everyone is the same. Some can drink wine with saturday
dinner, and never have an addiction problem. Some are 85 lbs and only
need to eat a 4 oz steak, while many are 245lbs and can eat a 16 oz
steak without doing any harm to their body. Sparingly is the proper
word, as it allows us to choose for ourselves, and the Lord can judge
us, based on our level of understanding.
John
