Have you ever heard in a meeting that is open to the public for
instruction
that Lucifer gave such instructions? Would it surprise you that he did so?

I have not seen any official Mormon Church teaching on this
matter on their web site.

But to be honest with you, there is nothing that my church
teaches that involves a secret. But this is the
impression that I get from looking at the few responses to
my initial query. When did a sacred thing become a secret
thing even to Latter-day Saints who have not gone throught
the ceremony?

John,

It is all a matter of understanding, I think. You understand that things
that are not spoken of, which are not publicly discussed, etc are thereby
considered secret. I understand that things that are not spoken of, that are
not publicly discussed may be false, or may be true but not something that
should be discussed because they may be misunderstood. Suppose for example
that Lucifer did suggest to Adam and Eve, or merely suggest to them that
they should clothe themselves. What would that mean? If the Church is not
posting on its official sights and in its publications something, then I
understand that what is not published is certainly not required knowledge
for those who have not been taught it.

I will say categorically, however, since I see not harm in saying this,
which is true, that there is no statement that I am aware of anywhere in
which we are told that Adam and Eve made themselves aprons of fig leaves or
anything else because Lucifer told them to. Notice, I am not saying whether
or not Lucifer may have had that thought, or made the suggestion.

But I guess my main point would be that anything that is not discussed
publicly is not really something that should be discussed here, whether it
has to do with church teachings or profane things. It seems to boil down to
speculation, and while speculation is fun, for some, it is not really very
profitable from my own understanding. Speculation is how all the various
conflicting notions come about.

I would not say a sacred thing became a secret thing. I am not aware that we
are talking about anything that Lucifer may or may not have said that would
be sacred. Nor is there anything in the Church that is secret, but some
things are somewhat guarded until the members have demonstrated in some way
their readiness to be exposed to it, such as the Temple Ordinances. Members
must be of a certain maturity in age, as well as a certain maturity, roughly
measured by their time of membership and their activity and approach to
learning of the Teachings of the Church. It is not time for some people to
learn some things yet, since they have not learned what they have already
been offered. That may apply to me as well as to anyone else.

The teachings in the Temple are all symbolic, and there is no set way that
they must be understood at any time. What we need, and are willing to
accept, is what we will learn in the Temple. But is that much different from
what we learn in our ordinary meetings? When have you learned more that you
are willing to accept? I said learn, not merely been exposed to. Exposure
without pondering and understanding does not equal learning.
