Joseph Smith seems to have gotten much of his after-life theology from the
Swedenborgians. Swedenborg, who died many decades before Joseph was born,
had views of multiple heavens, many kingdoms, etc.

It's worth reading Swedenborg (especially "Heaven and Hell") in light of
the Mormon teachings.
