Hard to believe I'm the only one here old enough to remember this, but
I do recall that President Harold B. Lee once gave a Conference talk in
which he said that official Church doctrine is the Scriptures plus that
which is expressed by "the united voice of the First Presidency and the
Quorum of the Twelve."
I am old enough to remember President Joseph Fielding Smith speaking in
his last Priesthood session at General Conference when he said:
<snip the quote for bandwidth>
This statement falls rather carefully short (IMO) of saying that the
UVotFPatQotT is scripture, but rather seems to class it as "counsel".
Perhaps there was a quote from President Lee that I missed?
I've posted these in the past, but i'll post them again to complete the
record on this thread, and also out of a sense of irony, since i'm not
old enough to remember HBL or JFS (of course, i'm old enough i probably
*should* remember Bruce R. McConkie, but i don't):
Harold B. Lee (from "The place of the living prophet" in
_Charge_to_religious_educators_ p.111):
"It is not to be thought that every word spoken by the General
Authorities is inspired, or that they are moved upon by the Holy
Ghost in everything they speak or write. Now you keep that in mind.
I don't care what his position is, if he writes something or speaks
something that goes beyond anything that you can find in the
standard church works, unless that one be the prophet, seer, and
revelator--please note that one exception--you may immediately say,
Well, that is his own idea."
Joseph Fielding Smith (in _Doctrines_of_salvation_ 3:203):
"It makes no difference what anyone has said, if what has been said
is in conflict with what the Lord has revealed, we can set it aside.
My words, and the teachings of any other member of the Church, high
or low, if they do not square with the revelations, we need not
accept them. Let us have this matter clear. We have accepted the
four standard works as the measuring yardsticks, or balances, by
which we measure every man's doctrine."
Bruce R. McConkie (in _Mormon_doctrine_ p.765):
"The books, writings, explanations, expositions, views, and theories
of even the wisest and greatest men, either in or out of the Church,
do not rank with the standard works. Even the writings, teachings,
and opinions of the prophets of God are acceptable only to the
extent that they are in harmony with what God has revealed and what
is recorded in the standard works. When the living oracles speak in
the name of the Lord or as moved on by the Holy Ghost, however,
their utterances are then binding upon all who hear, and whatever is
said will without any exception be found to be in harmony with the
standard works. The Lord's house is a house of order, and one truth
never contradicts another."
Anyway, just posting these because it seems to me that they clearly
place canonized scripture at a different level than anything else.
