Snip

Bruce I am afraid that you are wrong on this on. YM presidents don't
have keys. They do however have rights and privilages as you said. Keys
they do not. Remember that the Bishop holds the keys to the Aaronic
priesthood. In reality YM president is a calling the church could do
without and the church would still function. An in fact that is a good
way of putting it. If we could do without the calling and still
function (RS president excluded, cause we would fall apart without the
sisters) then they don't have keys. I will mention that I didn't
address Mission and temple presidents in an earlier post. I guess I
just forgot about them. I am not 100% sure about this but I believe
they must have some keys. Mission presidents preside over Districts so
in that sense they are just like Stake presidents, as for temple
presidents one would think they have some sort of key. After all they
preside over the most holy places on earth.

Interesting. Yet the Relief Society is not independent of the Priesthood,
and is required to act under the direction of the Bishop, is she not? The EQ
President is given keys, as I recall, but he is also under the supervision
of the Stake President. The HP Group Leader is not a President, and is not
given Keys, but he also acts with the authority allowed him by the Stake
President.

We have a problem of two few words with similar meanings, I think.
Melchizedek Priesthood holder has as much authority to act for God (as much
Priesthood) as the President of the Church.God has so organized His Church,
however, that there is a hierarchy in which this authority may be
implemented and executed. This we (for want of a better word, and from
tradition) call keys. So I, as supposedly a worthy holder of the Melchizedek
Priesthood, can. Only one man on the earth at any time, at least in this
dispensation holds all the Priesthood Keys and is authorized to exercise
them. That is the Presiding authority in the Church. All Apostles are
granted those same keys, but not the permission to use them unless
specifically given it by the Stake President.

So we get mixed up with the overlapping of what we mean by "keys" and
"authority". When my Mother was still living, she had a safety deposit box
at her bank. My name was on the paper work, giving me authority to get into
that box. I had a physical key to get in that box, but I also had to have
that paper that vouched for the fact that I was authorized to do so. Not
only that, but an official of the bank also had to "exercise a key" before
mine would work.

When I was a Missile Combat Crew Commander, I was the only person who had
the combination of a particular combination lock, which I could change any
time I wanted to. The lock fit the outer door of a little safe made with
another door, fitted with my Deputy Commander's lock, to which only he had
the combination. There were specific instructions regarding times that we
were authorized to unlock those locks and enter the safe. The fact that we
were authorized to enter was not sufficient for us to do so, without
specific instructions. A Priesthood Holder has all the authority he needs to
do what is further authorized by his office and the offices above his. No
more.
