If I suspect a family/individual is having difficulty making ends
meet, I often mention it to my bishop/branch pres. That at least
alerts him to a potential problem. Often he has already known about
the issue. Sometimes he has not; in those cases, he may or may not
decide to initiate an appointment with the people, to see if any
ward/branch assistance would be warranted.

In short, I'm a firm believer that a bishop/b.p. should have as much
info as possible.
