If you respect the majority, then surely you are opposed to extending
marriage to gays, since that is the current majority public opinion in this
country.

I certainly don't respect the majority in cases of removing rights
from others or forbidding rights from others. That's why we have
a Constitution like we do. And even then, we have a bad history
of majority rule. Just ask the slaves or the Mormons.
