The news has been filled the last couple of weeks with the
actions of Church leadership in support the anti-gay-marriage
amendment. Many of the things said by Church leaders have
been disingenuous, some downright dishonest. And the campaign
by local leaders has danced on both sides of the legal line
about political activism by non-profit corporations, using
ward e-mail and mailing lists, like our local Relief Society
did.
The church has not taken a position on any candidate that I know of.
However they can and do take stands on issues such as this. Nothing
wrong with that that I can see.
....
The fact that the amendment will also outlaw polygamy, which
official mormon doctrine ALSO teaches is a foundation for
eternal exaltation, didn't seem to trouble Nelson at all.
*Which* official mormon doctrine? Polygamy is official only when
specifically commanded, cf. Jacob chapter 2.
....
I also wish they'd hurry up and act. There are packs of
gay people married in Massachusetts and Canada roaming in my
neighborhood, threatening my marriage.
You seem to suggest (rather sarcastically) that such things as
homosexual marriage and other court orders do not pose a threat to LDS
doctrine and practice. The news would indicate otherwise. In Mass.
the Catholic Church is no longer allowed to facilitate adoptions
because they won't do it for homosexual prospective parents. (Can the
same restrictions be far behind for LDS social services?) It would be
only a short step from that to not allowing marriages to be performed
by any organization unwilling to do homosexual marriages.
The threat is real.
More seriously, why did the Church get involved in such a
cynical political stunt? This never had a chance of
passing, all commentators agreed on that beforehand. Did
the Church need to play its part in this GOP "get out the
vote" ploy?
Or just maybe they are working to lay the groundwork for what we might
achieve in the future. The amendment came closer to passing this time
than last. If enough senators feel that their re-election is
threatened, they will vote for it next time. That is the way our
current system works.
