One of my favorites that I sometimes hear, typically in primary, is that
"the wine was just like non-alcoholic grape juice" when referring to any
references to wine that the Savior or others may have drunk.
But if that is the honest belief of those teaching it, how is that an
example of dishonesty or hypocrisy?
You're right. Maybe it's only an example of thoughtless stupidity. But since
no scriptural account, and no pronouncement from the church leadership, has
ever made such a statement (at least not any that I have ever seen) the
person making such a statement must have reached it through some sort of
reasoning. As best I can figure, the reasoning might go something like this:
1) Through Section 89 of the D&C, God tells Latter-day Saints not to drink
alcohol.
(This statement is an oversimplification, but a lot of LDS believe it
literally.)
2) Because God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, anything he says
at any time must be applicable at all times.
3) Since God doesn't want us to drink alcohol in our time, it has always
been wrong to do so.
(even though there is no such admonition recorded in the scriptures)
4) Jesus never did anything that was wrong.
5) Therefore Jesus could never have drunk alcohol.
Anyone who is presuming to teach anyone anything in church has a duty not to
succumb to such an ethnocentric assumption. So I'd say that dishonesty (with
oneself) and hypocrisy (about a gospel that seeks truth) are both in play.
