I'm guessing that James might be refering to the line from The Family: A
Proclamation to the World, where it says, "Gender is an essential
characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and
purpose."
I've read a suggestion that Gregor Mendel's work in genetics, and his
ideas about heritability, could have been sparked by the observation
that when a male mates with a female, the offspring is almost inevitably
either male or female, and almost never some unexpected amalgam of the
two. This is a fact that is born out by the experience of most of us.
One either has a Y chromosome or one doesn't. Sounds pretty binary to
me, supporting the proclamation pronouncement. But that's a different
thing, I think, from the human interactions Craig was talking about.
Besides, he said, "sort of reject" not "totally reject under all
circumstances."
