Prophet Muhammad once said, =93That which can intoxicate in large.....
quantities is also forbidden in minute quantities." Based on this
narration, Muslims in general have developed a critical eye towards
everything that they eat which could possibly contain even trace
amounts of alcohol, including chocolates, ice-cream, cakes and even
sushi...
In my opinion, when the Quran or this hadith refers to alcohol, it refers
(implicity) to drinking alcohol, not to trace amounts of alcohol. I can see
the purpose of this hadith, because even if you drink a small (non
intoxicating) amount of alcohol, it can easily induce you to increase your
consumption later on. Whereas with trace amounts (for instance in soy
sauce), the alcohol content is so minute that you don't even notice it
and it doesn't have any effect on the body, so IMO the prohibition of trace
amounts is sheer legalism, and not in line with the prohibition of alcohol
as originally meant in the Quran.
