I reply to capsaicin May 15
The doctrine on lying in Islam that I refer to is not the Shiite
taqiah doctrine but is the doctrine set out by Ghazali, who was a
Sunni, and can be found cited in the Sunni compendium of shariah law,
"Reliance of the Traveller."
You refer to God being forgiving if people lie to hide their faith; in
that case you must accept that taqiah is something to be forgiven,
that is that it is wrong.
Of course, under Christianity, God can forgive you if you lie; the
point is that lying is a sin and Christianity teaches this - as Jesus
did - but the Islamic teaching is that lying is permissible to obtain
a desirable end if telling the truth will not obtain it. There is a
radical difference.
