If I may try to offer an answer:

Because of couple of reasons I suppose.

1. Posters like this 'Robert' are regulary rejected as notorious
trolls on other moderated groups of "soc." content.

2. If there was only 2-3 weeks of 'Robert' posts in the beggining on
SRI, all subscribers will have good fun with silly crusader, and
then drop it on regular basics to reduce noise on otherwise serious
group. However, little humor with crusader does not do harm.

3. Robert can be much more marginalized and forgoten if it doesn't
have counter-crusader who sistematicaly tries to catch all tons of
his mental garbage and political propaganda with small broom,
instead of ignoring him or occasionally making fun with him, when
moderators refuse to filter all this weeks or as I see in Google
archive, *months* of trolling what will normaly be filtered elswere.
Don't you think?

For example, many "secular" subscribers condemn Islam under the
"separation of Church and State" paradigm, but remain acutely silent
when a so-called "Islamic critic" posits the "Christian Right"
equivalent. Why is that? Is it cynically, the enemy of my enemy is a
friend, maxim?

I myself cannot subscribe this maxim. Even if whole muslim world
announce fatwa against me, such creatures like R. Houghton cannot be
my friends, or even allies. They are simply provocators. But succesive
provocators - as we see, some people are trying to clean up every lie
or provocation after him. I would call this Sizif's job.
