No, Robert, actually there is no "mass of evidence".
I give you an example:
Person B claims Person A told him something (X). The Persons C-Y hear this
report and narrate it to other audiences/later listeners.
Now, it may be that a person Z validly objects to Person Bs claim.
In this case noone should think, Persons C-Y are "mass evidence" supporting
Person Bs claim.
The Aisha story is not only weakly reported, it is also contrary to every
logic:
- How should Aisha have been engaged to someone even before the age of 6
years, if it is true that as of her 6th year the Prophet was the candidate
to marry her?
- Why should the Prophet whose youngest other wife was 17 years old while he
is reported to have mostly married old widows or divorced women marry a 9
year old girl?
- The "explanation" that by marrying Aisha at the age of 9 he wanted to
strengthen his bonds to his companion Abu Bakr is silly, because that bond
was already very strong when the marriage took place
- By showing interest for a 6-9 years old girl the Prophet would have made
himself object of many serious accusations and would endanger his own and
Abu Bakrs reputation.
- Umar ibn al Khattab is said to have married Um Kulthum bint Ali ibn Abi
Talib, who was very young. Some people seem to have protested against Umars
marriage with such a young girl. If in fact the Prophet had married Aisha at
the age of 9, Umar would not have the slightest problem to point at the
Prophets Sunnah and justify his action.
