Speaking from my knowledge of American History and not from a religious
point-of-view:
1. The Amish cause no trouble for anyone and are prized.
2. The United States very nearly went to war with the Mormons. It is
quite possible that only the Civil War over Slavery prevented a Civil
War with the Latter Day Saints. The Saints decided to make peace and we
worked out a compromise.
3. The Branch Davidians made trouble and were eradicated.
As I see it, a peculiar people can survive indefinitely, at least in
the United States, if their will is strong enough and they make no
trouble. If they make trouble society here is merciless.
Persecution of excentric religious communities is an old old thing.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam all started out as oppressed
minorities. The Jews fled from Egypt. The Muslims fled from Makka. The
Christians stayed home and suffered. It was God's will that they were
to survive. Conventional wisdom said they all were doomed. None of
them can be said to have been causing trouble. Society these days, at
least in the United States, is a bit more tolerant. But it will not
tolerate troublemakers.
