In article <5nrTf.554$Qm2.457@trndny03>, * irenic * says...
When in the U.S. last year I was surprised to see this book in several
airport bookshops (next to Rick Warren's Purpose-Driven Life): 'If Grace is
True: Why God Will Save Every Person' (Philip Gulley & James Mulholland,
HarperSanFrancisco, 2004)
Well, I am not surprised. If Timothy LaHaye's ridiculous apocalyptic series can
be so popular here, why not Warren's book, too?
[snip[
* Can God's will (God wills that 'all come to repentance') ever be
ultimately thwarted?
Yes.
[snip]
Universalism is the idea that all humans will be 'saved' / 'go to heaven'.
It's an ancient idea (the early church fathers Origen and St. Jerome
believed God would ultimately be reconciled with Satan).
But you misrepresent even what Origen said: he would never have worded it like
this, but rather, as: "Satan would ultimately be reconciled to God". The
difference is crucial.
And where do you get the idea that Jerome subscribed to this idea?
[snip]
Questions about hell and universalism are very, very important for thinking
and compassionate Christians.
Why, yes, they are important. Too important to treat as badly as you would be
reading _that_ book.
I am not sure you'll get the final answers in
this book.
And I am quite sure what you find in that book will be neither 'final', nor a
true 'answer'.
But it's worth reading,
No, it is not.
if only to challenge some deeply-held but
unexamined assumptions we all carry with us.
I'm sorry, do you have a different Gospel than I read? Where did you read the
comand "challenge unexamined assumptions"? I can't find that commandment.
