Re: Fw: Putting past practices behind us

Hoedy Richard,

I agree that the sciences individually are limited in that they
specialize in certain areas and do not give an overview but that
doesn't mean that we can not step back ourselves and include what the
sciences tell us in our overall world view.

A balance has to be found for sure. A balance between an appreciation
of what we have learned and can learn through empirical means as well
as an appreciation of what we have learned and can learn through
spiritual and mystical means.

I agree with Joesph Campell that in the West, particularily in North
America, we have lost or at least lost track of our collective ethos:

"For Campbell, the "power of myth" is the power of metaphor and poetry
to capture the imaginations of individuals and societies. Myth supplies
a sense of meaning and direction that transcends mundane existence
while giving it significance. It has four functions: The mystical
function discloses the world of mystery and awe, making the universe "a
holy picture." The cosmological function concerns science and the
constitution of the universe. The sociological function "supports and
validates a certain social order." Everyone must try to relate to the
pedagogic function which tells us "how to live a human lifetime under
any circumstances." America, Campbell believes, has lost its collective
ethos and must return to a mythic understanding of life "to bring us
into a level of consciousness that is spiritual" "

What is important is that we do not allow our personal religious
beliefs and opinions to become a barrier to greater understanding
simply because that understanding appears contrary to those beliefs and
opinions.

This is why Baha'u'llah always warned so emphatically against blind
imitation.

Any religious beliefs or opinions that causes or allows individuals to
behave in a manner which inhibits instead of facilliates the
actualization of the oneness of humanity should be examined as to their
soundness.

The whole intent and purpose for Revelation is, as Baha'u'llah stated,
to enable humanity to begin to regard one another: "as one soul". The
human genome project has proven that we are closer to being one than we
could have ever imagined, genetically. It is up to humanity to realize
that this oneness applies spiritually as well.

Yours Larry Rowe
