Hi Albert-
I have always had a problem with this and other quotes related to gossip and backbiting. To me one needs to consider purpose or intentions.
Would satire speak to intent Doug?

For
example gossip can be idle talk whereas backbiting is gossip with an evil intention. So if we accuse someone of backbiting we are also accusing them of having an evil intention and can we really know the condition of the soul and whether the person has an evil intention?
What is the difference between criticism, gossip and backbiting. Or what about the fact that we must warn others of a harmful influence in the community, such as a child molester, CB, murderer, etc. So I do believe intention and purpose have something to do with how we view this issue of gossip and backbiting.
