Re: Why I Wrote *The Emperor's New Clothes*

"If I were to find fault with Peter Khan's talk it is because he
doesn't really provide the spiritual rationales which overrule the
material considerations in connection with the Arc."

But there is a place where Peter Khan *does* provide the spiritual
reasons -- if reason is the right word for something fundamentally
superrational. And whatever the Master might have meant when he spoke
of spiritual matters, we can see that Peter Khan uses the word
"spiritual" in a sense that excludes unaided reason.

"Our deepest reason (for the Arc Project) is related to the mystery of
our Faith, the mystery of Carmel as the Mount of God, the mystery of
Bahji, mystery of sacredness and holy ground, mystery of the Book of
Isaiah, the spiritual significance of Baha'u'llah's Tablet of Carmel.
These are deep spiritual mysteries *which we may not understand* but
they are the reason of our efforts."

So the only "reasons" Peter Khan offers are interpretations of
prophecies ancient and recent -- something that is always risky -- and
an appeal to "mystery." Specifically, he speaks of mysteries "which we
may not understand" -- in contrast to the Master, who says that "what
the mind of man *cannot understand* religion must not accept." And
this is precisely what Peter Khan is saying we should accept, something
that doesn't make sense according to unassisted reason.

"This you can't tell to someone who is materially oriented because he
won't understand it."

Once again, "material" is made to bear the same burden that, for a
secular writer, belongs to "rational."
