Kitab-i-Aqas Project

Good morning
Some considerable time ago I advised via this newsgroup of the existance of
the "Kitab-i-Aqdas Project". That was in its very early days, when it was
not showing its potential, and had not even been given the name of the
"Kitab-i-Aqdas Project". One could at that time say (perhaps) just another
HTML version of the Kitab-i-Aqdas. Since then, it has grown. From that small
beginning, the vision that has been driving development has crystalised into
a number of distinct goals. Some of the goals have been achieved, some are
in progress while some have yet to be commenced. The latest release is dated
the 18 May 2006, and it may be accessed via the URL
http://members.aardvark.net.au/romane/index.htm. Releases are planned to
occur every 4 to 6 weeks as the new sections are more fully developed, God
willing.
With your permission, provided below is a very brief description of the
"Kitab-i-Aqdas Project". My apologies in advance if this post becomes overly
lengthy as a result. More information is available from the entry-level
pages titled 'WhatWhy', 'Release notes', 'Update history' and 'Navigation',
while for those who wish to be able to access it while offline, a .iso file
for burning to CD, plus images for a CD label and a jewel-case cover, can be
accessed via the 'Other' page.
The "Kitab-i-Aqdas Project" is a HTML presentation of the the Most Holy Book
of the Baha'i Dispensation. It includes a fully-linked copy of the index
that exists in the rear of the book, as well as additional indices to allow
direct navigation to the individual Paragraphs, Questions and Answers, and
Notes, either by number or by opening phrase. The Notes themselves have been
fully cross-linked as per the notations within the Notes themselves. That
was all completed within the first stage of development.
The work has seen new indices created and new material included. The
following tasks are, though quite functional, still in progress; each
release will see further expansion.
The process of forward-indexing is well underway, with all of the Paragraphs
and the first 50 Questions and Answers now completed - forward-indexing is
the process of indexing together related sections (individual Paragraphs,
Questions and Answers, Notes and other sections) so that it may be quickly
and readily ascertained to what other sections any single section is
directly related. These 'Related' indices are available from both the 'Table
of Contents' page and from an icon on each page that has been
forward-indexed. Each release will see a further 25 sections
forward-indexed.
Throughout the Notes there are references to other Texts and works, whether
from other Faiths or from the Baha'i Faith - the full text of these
references (those, at least, that are available in English) are being added
and linked to from the place in the Notes where they are referenced. The
first 10 Notes have been completed, while there is a smattering throughout
the remainder of the Notes. Every release will see the number of included
references grow. A list of those already available will be found linked from
the 'Release notes' page.
Documentation from the Universal House of Justice that is directly related
to the Kitab-i-Aqdas is being indexed and included. As of the 18 May
release, this includes those on Obligatory Prayer, on exemptions and on
Huququ'llah, with documentation regarding Fasting having been added as it
was found while researching Obligatory Prayer (often inseparably) - any
remaining documentation on Fasting will be available with the next release.
A new index ('Decisions, guidance and advice') for these documents is
available from the 'Table of Contents' page, as well as links to this index
being found within the 'Related' indices wherever applicable. It is planned
that, once this aspect comes closer to completion, to begin a similar
process with the work of the beloved Guardian, Shoghi Effendi.
As the documentation from the Universal House of Justice is being added, any
relevant compilation is also being included, linked from both the
'Decisions, guidance and advice' index, and from the new 'Index to
compilations' found on the 'Table of Contents' page. The compilation on
Huququ'llah, and the compilation on Obligatory Prayer and Fasting are
available now.
An English dictionary is slowly being added. With the focus being on
completing the forward-indexing, and considering the amount of work involved
in creating the dictionary, progress here is slow. To date, only the first 3
Paragraphs have the dictionary included, with each release to see at least 1
more Paragraph updated. In an attempt to maintain the aesthetics of the
written Word, a link to a dictionary entry will be seen only when the mouse
cursor hovers over the word, when the word will change colour. A direct link
to the dictionary will also be found on the 'Table of Contents' page.
As mentioned above, some of the goals have not yet been commenced. These
include access to other Texts from both Baha'u'llah and 'Abdu'l-Baha that
restate in some way the Text of the Kitab-i-Aqdas (for an example, see 'The
Second Taraz' on page 35 of "Tablets of Baha'u'llah"), the incorporation of
study material, the addition of authoritive books and treatises, and as well
provide comprehensive cross-indexing between the compilations, the
Kitab-i-Aqdas, the authoritive books and treatises and the study materials.
It is also certain that as time moves forward, yet other goals will be
identified and added to the list.
This is, perhaps, sufficient for this post. This Project is offered in the
hope that it will encourage and support others in their understanding of
this most precious and bounteous Wine from the pen of Baha'u'llah.
I am unlikely to return here every night to respond to replies (if any) that
may be made, due to the conditions of my employment, so please be patient.
And if emailing me directly, the underscore in my email address will need to
be removed - a perhaps inadequate means of trying to avoid spam, but...
With warmest greetings
Romane
