I will try to answer your questions as simply as possible because that is
your wish.

You: > The question called for a simple yes or no.<

Let's see. I will re-quote the question. You: "If you understand
Gilberto's answer then please tell me if he believes in the equality of men
and women and does the Qur'an teach such equality?"

Answer: Yes.

Dear Kent- If you understand Gilberto's answer then please tell me if he
believes in the equality of men and women and does the Qur'an teach
such
equality?<

Gilberto: >I believe that God is just and compassionate. And if you
believe
that the Quran is the word of God and Muhammad is the messenger of God,
then you should be able to follow the Quran and sunnah of Muhammad, while
being just and compassionate to women.<

To paraphrase (see above for exact wording) You ask if Gilberto believes
in
the equality of men and women. He answered that he (Gilberto) believes
that
God's word is that he (Gilberto) should be just and compassionate to
women
(implying that he [Gilberto] should be also just and compassonate with
men).
As Gilberto believes that being just and compassionate to both men and
women
is the word of God, Gilberto believes that is the same thing as believing
"in the equality of men and women" as you asked.

Dear Kent-
The question called for a simple yes or no.
The reason I asked the question was because of what he and Susan had been
discussing with regard to biblical quotes and Susan mentioning about how
Muslims treat their women. So if being just and compassionate means
treating men and women with equality then why are women treated
differently than men in the Muslim community?

The first time around you asked " If you do or don't what is your
rationale
for such a belief?" which is what Gilberto answered.

Now you want to know: "... does the Qur'an teach such equality?" I could
guess that Gilberto's answer will be that the Q'uran teaches justice and
compassion which, when applied to all of humanity, is tantamount to
equality, but, as I said, that is just a guess.

I would agree that to treat one with justice and compassion would be to
treat with equality.

Are you aware, Doug, that the US Constitution valued blacks at
three-fifths
of a man? That many view the exclusion of women from the Universal House
of
Justice as an issue of inequality, that there are many issues of justice
and
fairness in the world that are unresolved? I thank God that Gilberto
believes in justice and compassion, don't you?

I am aware of both but not sure what it has to do with my question to
Gilberto.
I did not bring up this subject Kent, I am merely voicing my frank opinion
as we are
supposed to do.

But I don't believe this is the proper forum to challenge Gilberto's
beliefs. Maybe you should visit an Islamic forum. He is, however, in
the
proper forum to challenge our beliefs.

I am not challenging his beliefs. He made some statements that I am
wanting to understand because this is a forum for discussing the Baha'i
Teachings.

Asking a question and wanting a simple answer is not a challenge. I am
not one to engage in intellectual debate such as so many seem prone to do.

peace,
doug

Can you post verses from the Qur'an that clearly states Muslims should
treat women as equals?
Susan is a Middle Eastern scholar and seems to feel otherwise and
Gilberto
disagreed and so I asked my question and apparently nobody want to give
a
direct answer.

doug

I think I am your best friend on the SRB. I can tell you why, but, for
several reasons I would love to talk to you about, it would not be
fruitful
at this time. I am sure, if you stick to the SRB, you will one day
thank
me.

You: > Dear Gilberto - ... I do not understand why you bring up
subjects,
such as equality, and then refuse to answer questions.<

Gilberto answered your questions very well. In fact it is right here:
>I
believe that God is just and compassionate. And if you believe
that the Quran is the word of God and Muhammad is the messenger of God,
then
you should be able to follow the Quran and sunnah of
Muhammad, while being just and compassionate to women.<

If you need a better answer than that I think you need ask better
questions.
To wit: >Do you believe in the equality of men and
women? If you do or don't what is your rationale for such a belief?<

If what he wrote doesn't answer your question to you, then you need to
ask
the question differently. I liked his answer a lot.

Afterall if there is a
disagreement about the principle we need to discuss it to bring about
unity, which is the goal of both the Muslim and Baha'i religions,
right?

So can you please give me a direct answer to my question and a
rationale
or backup from the Qur'an.

You know there are those on this List who feel Muslims do not practice
equality of men and women and I would like to know why?

doug

I don't want to get into a big fruitless argument. I will just say
that I believe that God is just and compassionate. And if you believe
that the Quran is the word of God and Muhammad is the messenger of
God, then you should be able to follow the Quran and sunnah of
Muhammad, while being just and compassionate to women.
