In the 1911 (first edition) of the Oregon Masonic Code, on page 107, the
lights are shown as being placed AT THE STATIONS OF the WM, SW, and JW.
The text below the diagram reads: "NOTE-- Errors are so often made in
placing the lights around the altar that the preceding diagram is inserted
for the direction of the Senior Deacon, whose duty it is to see that they
are properly distributed. The stars (on the diagram) represent the
positions of the lights in the E., W., and S., and the black dot (in the
diagram), the place of darkness in the N., where there is no light."
The text continues with one of the more interesting lines I have ever read:
"The line passing through these points in the diagrams represents the limits
of the Lodge, and shows that the lights are in the proper cardinal points."
Not sure if it would be against the group's charter for me to try to post a
picture so I'll leave it to your own devices to find a copy.
