Iraqi Masonic Symbol

After being in Iraq with the US Army, I came across a brass square and
compasses from a roadside vendor. This prompted me to search high and low
for any signs of masonic lodges or activity in Iraq. After some time, an
interpreter informed me that the square and compass I had was the insignia
for the Iraqi Army Engineer Corps under the Sadam regime. He also informed
me that most Iraqis had never heard of freemasonry, and that it was not
allowed in Iraq as it interferes with Islam.
I found it rather interesting that they would use a masonic symbol that was
recognized world-wide as a military branch insignia.
