remember it well enough to know whether I agree.

I don't really know either Goethe's original or the version of the
story in Massenet -- all I know is from reading synopses of the
plots of both, and neither sounds like an unbelievable story. The
opera sounds unbelievably BORING, but that's because of the nature
of the source story, in which there is basically only a single
external dramatic act in the entire plot (Werther's suicide).

I can't say that the story is any less unbelievable or melodramatic
than any number of Italian operas. But I think it's just not a very
good story for making an opera out of.
