There are free _paper_ newspapers that seem to do OK.
Generally speaking, you don't see them do a lot of, say, foreign coverage,
or even national coverage. Occasionally they will do a certain amount of
local political coverage, but they basically exist to carry the ads that
pay for them, and to give people access to things like movie schedules
and, less now with Craig's List, classified ads.
