They didn't think white people would vote for a black person and they
didn't want to be disappointed again.

Some people are less cynical than others?

Iowans met him and liked him, met the people working for him and liked
them. We met Hillary and the people working for her and didn't like
them. We liked John Edwards, but been there, done that.
