Yes.

I say this as we are about to have to go shop for a new stereo
receiver, as our two-year-old Sony has started, for the third time in
its short life, to shut off with a loud "pop" after running for about
five minutes. A responsible manufacturer would have replaced (rather
than trying to repair) it the second time this happened. But now it's
not under warranty any more (the previous repairs to an obviously
defective unit don't reset the warranty, apparently), despite the fact
that, at exactly the same time, we received a notice in the mail that
our warranty was expiring on April 4, and wouldn't we like to buy an
extension?

No more Sony components, ever.
