Though AA does emphasize a spiritual
practice, it is neither required, dogmatic, nor is it organized
into anything beyond an attempt to get alcoholics and drug
addicts to look for a power that is greater than themselves.

While I'm a big supporter of harm reduction, I still think AA,
like a methadone clinic, simply replaces one addiction with
another.

That may be your experience, but I certainly know people who have
"worked" the program to one degree or another, successfully in
terms of their addictions, and yet not become meeting junkies.

Is it not the case that AA is built around the "higher power"
concept (however that is defined), and that you give up to that
"higher power" (however you define it for yourself)? Is that not a
replacement addiction?

My natural inclination is to agree with you, but even at my
pissiest I have to concede that a maintenance dose of "doorknob"
is almost certainly better for everyone than whatever it's replacing,
whereas to my mind there is no safe dose of "God".
It wasn't until Mike's post that I knew doorknobs were OK:
until that post, all the people that know that I knew to be in
AA were, to my knowledge, of the "higher power==God" variety;
and, whereas "Let Go--Let God" bumperstickers proclaiming one's
AAfiliation are common, I've never yet seen "Don't Do--Doorknob Does".
