each other.
I can't keep my Chris's straight so I don't know if I'm repeating
myself, but I appreciate that small degree of respect. That is indeed
what happened.
The ridiculous defence of his own private understanding of
"have a point" springs to mind -- all just to defend an untenable position.
And thank you for offering a fine example of how we went so seriously
awry.
The Cambridge Dictionary of American English agrees with "[my] own
private understanding of 'have a point.'" Which kind of casts a new
light on my "ridiculous defence" of that "untenable position" then,
doesn't it? Being, you know, correct and all.
Here's the page:

Here's the definition: "You have a point (= What you say is
reasonable)."
So, shall we recap? Need I remind you how I was relentlessly attacked
.. . . by people who were WRONG?
OTOH, Mr Legull has not only showed his sanctimoniousness (in the thread
with "marcie", the holier-than-you attitude was rather unpleasant to
watch)
Your priorities reflect badly upon you. Better to speak up and risk
sounding sanctimonious than watch someone be pilloried and keep quiet.
Read my summary of the Marcie thread back: it's horrifying stuff below
*animals*, really, and they lick themselves below the waist. Would
have been great if I could have done it without sounding sanctimonious.
(As we've seen from my inept writing, I'm just content to convey some
sort of *point.*) Apparently couldn't. Regrets!
but also his own nastiness towards those not, as he has the good
fortune to be, born in or citizens of the USA.
Here your bias comes into play. As a product of the U. S. educational
system, I couldn't find Rhode Island on the map. I waited in line for
six hours at the Old Vic to get tickets for Ian McKellan in "Othello"
while the crowd of Brits around me made it absolutely clear to me that
anyone with even a third-grade education has READ the freakin' thing
through once or twice. Meanwhile, I know PhD's in English here who
couldn't spell 'Shakespeare' right.
I criticize; I am, for better or worse, a critic. I never go too far
out on a limb or skewer a group in bad humo(u)r, and I take care never
concentrate my pettiness on one small part of a miserable world. The
English are, by and large, weird. Americans are, by and large, stupid.
Don't shoot the messenger.

If I were in Brixton I'd say that makes two of us.
