I have a *job interview*. For Senior Assistant Archivist
at Cal State
Dominguez Hills. Yeah, yeah, it's not Chief Archivist at the Hoover
or Harvard or Yale, but it's the first nibble I've had in 12 months,
it's a tenure-track position, the people are nice, and there are some
interesting collections. Oh, and it comes with a *salary* and
*benefits*, so if I get it I can stop selling artwork off the walls.
The only negative is a 4-hour daily commute.

Two hours each way, I hope you mean. I've been doing that. It's
bearable, but only just.

Happily, I can (and do) take public transit almost every day (I've
driven in twice this year, I think).

The big problem is a lack of time to exercise. I can keep up with
reading and email on the train.

In unrelated news, a former coworker sent me email saying that she is
resigning (from the place that laid me off last year). She said that
two other people had also given their notices, and someone else quit
last month. At least two other people are looking. Maybe they'll leave
too. Hurray!

Though in a state of society some must have greater
luxuries and comforts than others, yet all should have
the necessities of life; and if the poor cannot exist,
in vain may the rich look for happiness or prosperity.
The legistlature is never so well employed as when they
look to the interests of those who are at a distance
from them in the ranks of society. It is their duty
to do so; religion calls for it; humanity calls for it;
and if there are hearts who are not awake to either of
those feelings, their own interests would dictate it.
