...And yes, the Spanish version is far from a literal, word-for-word
translation of the English. However, judging from the performances
to which we're subjected before every sporting event, very few
native-born, English-speaking citizens know enough of the lyrics topass judgment. In any event, it[']s a national anthem, and as we've
discussed here before, one really doesn't want to analyze the words
to these songs too carefully.
for a good bit of discussion, with lots of links, see Eric Bakovic's

My grandmother, who became a US citizen without setting foot on US
soil, never learned the English words, but always sang TSSB in German,
though I don't know whether it was the Niklas Müller or the De Marsan
version (I find it difficult to imagine her taking such rocking-horse
lyrics as "Die Raketen am Ort / Und die Bomben vom Fort, /Sie zeigten
bei Nacht, / Daß die Flagge noch dort" seriously). And I've heard
TSSB sung in German at the meetings of several German-American
(technically, Donauschwaben) organizations in Orange County, CA. But
the members of these organizations are all s(t)olid, conservative
Republicans. Perhaps different rules apply to those of a different
political persuasion.
MP, who finds it amusing that so many people should get their knickers
and/or knockers in a twist over a bit of 18th-century bombast set to
the tune of a drinking song
