Which prompts me to ask:
There's not a separate anthem for French-speaking Canadians, n'est-ce
pas? (Or maybe there is. But if not ...)
Do the French lyrics for "O Canada" match the English, line for line?
not at all. the tune/metre are the same, and they both begin "O
Canada", but that's about it.
the english version is a few years younger, and has far too many
repetitions of "stand on guard for thee", though fewer now than in the
sixties when I first learned it (when O Canada actually became the
o-fisshal national anthem, as recently as 1980, some of the english
words were changed to make it a little more inclusive, and less
repetitive. to the best of my knowledge the french words have never
changed).
English: O Canada/ our home and native land / true patriot love / in
all thy sons command / with glowing hearts we see thee rise / the true
north strong and free / from far and wide, O Canada / we stand on guard
for thee / god keep our land / glorious and free / o canada we stand on
guard for thee / o canada we stand on guard for thee
French (from memory, spelling likely to be atrocious) O canada / terre
de nos aieux / ton front est cient / des fleuron glorieux / car ton
bras sait porter l'epee / il sait portait la croix / ton histoire est
une epopee / des plus brillants exploits / et ta valeur / de foi
trempee / protegera nos foyers et nos droits / protegera nos foyers et
nos droits
the translation of the french, from the gummint of canada site:
O Canada! Land of our forefathers / Thy brow is wreathed with a
glorious garland of flowers. /As in thy arm ready to wield the sword, /
So also is it ready to carry the cross./ Thy history is an epic of the
most brilliant exploits. / Thy valour steeped in faith / Will protect
our homes and our rights / Will protect our homes and our rights.
At Hockey games if there's some celebrity singing it, there's a
macaronic version where the first four lines are in english, then the
next four in french, then finishing in english. makes no grammatical
sense if translated, but that's living in a bilingual country for you.
Me, I always sing the french words.
