I rememeber watching one of those trauma center reality tv
programs in which an ER doctor (Caucasian) refused to give a
patient (African American) analgesia while she removed a
bullet from his lower leg. Other ER doctors and nurses were
watching (because of course the patient was screaming in agony)
were aghast at such sadism, but she blithely ignored them. To
the patient she said, "Shut up, it doesn't hurt *that* much."
And this went on for minutes. That kind of cruelty really
seemed to stem from racism. It would have taken about a minute
to shoot some xylocaine in there. What I didn't understand was
why the other doctors (there were several, it was a large
urban hospital), didn't physically stop her from doing that.
To continue my gripe about Versed, what if they'd given it
to this guy, and proceeded with exactly the procedure above?
In the 60s, they thought giving women scopolamine during labor
was a great idea. The Moms screamed their way through it, but
didn't remember a thing. How nice. Grrr.
Or how about how they performed abortions for women that didn't have
money. A shot of prostaglandin and cramp baby cramp then on to the D&C
in the morning.
Women who had money went straight to the D&C. Interesting isn't it.
