You're mixing contemporary party politics with a party platform going
back more than a century.

Have you forgotten Satayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are
condemned to repeat it."

How far back should we place the limit, then? Should we stop
comparisons before or after FDR, before or after Nixon or Reagan?
After all they're sooo last century! ;-)

His criticism is actually reasonable here. Why would you go back to
the 19th century unless there were no modern examples? But of course
there are, and you should forcefully state it.

Of course today's Republican politics is all about appealing to greed
and fear. They have to do that, as their actions (as opposed to their
rhetoric) benefit no one but big business. The Tea Party in particular
consists of people complaining about taxes without thinking of what
they get in return from the government, as has been exposed.
