Wow...that's quite a study! Definitely worth looking at more deeply.
The summary provided an interesting stat:
Of children under the age of one, 24.4/1000 are abused or neglected.
Those victims are 51.5% girls and 48.2% boys.
48.8% of the victims are white.
22.8% are black.
18.4% are hispanic.
This would seem to me that white women are considerably less tolerant of
baby behaviors and needs. They'll abuse and punish babies to more
than double the rate of other races. Why is that?
Why is it that a black mother, who is already marginalized on the
socio-economic scale, is far less likely to abuse her babies?
On the economic scale, white women tend to be more
wealthy than black mothers. Yet white women abuse
their babies far more often! Is it because there is more
expected out of a white woman than a black one? Is
this striving for meeting that expectation raising the
frustration level of white women? Are these women
using their babies as punching bags as a way to
reduce their own level of frustration?
This whole study makes me sick. Stop abusing
and neglecting the children! How can anybody
be so mean and vicious as to hurt a child?
Arghhh!
But, here's another thought: If men were the
main caretakers, would that really make a difference
in the cases of child-abuse? If men were the main
carers, they'd end up experiencing just as much
frustration. Could men handle that frustration
without striking out at a child?
Ah well....looks like if someone were needing
a nanny, the better choice would be go hire
a black or hispanic one. They're less likely
to abuse your children.
Heidi
As MarkB already pointed out, the baseline statistics need to take
account population ratios.
That said, i nanswer to your question about whether men would be abusers
if they were the main caregiver, consider the fact that men are held to
a higher standard about not hitting a woman or a child and are assumed
to possibly cause damage even with a minor slap. Modern women are
almost slap-happy with commercials showing them engaging in violence
because it's "cute". Kate Gosselin slapped around her children ON
CAMERA and verbally abused her husband and children and she's regarded
as a saint because hubby left her for another woman...
Can men be abusers? Sure they can. But at least they bring something
to the table most single mothers don't: They don't ask the taxpayer or
courts to find someone else to foot the tab.
