Mother abused son for three years

A mother subjected her child to a horrific reign of violence and abuse because
"she never wanted a son", Perth Sheriff Court has heard.
The woman locked the boy in his room at their home in Stanley, Perthshire, for
48 hours at a time and removed the door handle so he could not escape.

The boy, who was aged between eight and 11 at the time, was also
systematically assaulted with a belt and a sandal.

Social workers knew what was happening but did not tell the police.

The mother, who now lives in Dudley in the West Midlands, admitted wilfully
ill-treating her son and repeatedly attacking him at their home with
implements, between 1997 and 2000.

The court was told that the boy was taken into care as a result of the abuse
and no longer had contact with his mother.

Fiscal depute Lucy Keane said: "The family were living in Stanley and it is
the child's position that he had been told by his mother that she didn't want
a son.

"He spoke to social work about what happened but nothing further was done
about that, it seems, in a bid to prevent further distress to the child.

"It came to light that the child had been mistreated. He was kept in a room on
a regular basis and the mother would remove the door handle so he couldn't get
out.

"He would be kept in for fairly lengthy periods of time. He was left with a
bucket in the room for him to use as a toilet.

Miss Keane told the court that the boy spoke to his sister and eventually
reported the abuse to the police last year.

Solicitor Cliff Culley, defending, said the boy had been diagnosed with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and his mother had been unable to
cope.

Mr Culley said: "She is remorseful and very much regrets the situation that
has left her not having any contact with him, and losing her son through her
own actions.

"She has lost her son, which is something which in due course she would hope
to rectify, but the prospects do not look great at this stage.

"If she could turn back the clock she would."

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said: "I don't think anyone can be under any illusion.
This is a very serious matter.

"It is difficult to imagine more serious offences. It is her child.

"It maybe akin to historic cases of abuse in care homes. It is a moot point
where there is a greater breach of trust."

The mother will be sentenced later.
