British children are being turned into selfish materialists who value
individualism over "the principles of community", the Archbishop of Canterbury
has said.
An overwhelming majority of adults think children today are more materialistic
than previous generations, according to a report by the Good Childhood
Inquiry, of which the Dr Rowan Williams is patron.
"Children should be encouraged to value themselves for who they are as people
rather than what they own," he said. "The selling of lifestyles to children
creates a culture of material competitiveness and promotes acquisitive
individualism at the expense of the principles of community and cooperation."
What do you think? Are today's children too materialistic? Or do they simply
reflect the values of their parents and society at large?
Should the Government introduce stricter controls on advertising to children?
Or is it up to parents to decide how their children grow up?
