The idea that there was a time when a woman
was not allowed to buy anything on hire purchase without a man's
signature
now seems almost prehistoric.

I have often wondered where this was the case. My great-great-
grandmother was a pioneer, who homesteaded 320 acres, with her husband's
320 acres, in 1847. She retained title and control to her property, and
passed the property to her children and grandchildren in her will. My
grandmother inherited 40 acres from her in 1900, and retained the land
in her name over my grandfather's objections. She did well, since he
would have just squandered the money, but he had nothing to say about
it. It was her property, to keep or sell as she wanted.

I can only conclude that the absence of property rights and contract
rights for women was a local aberration, and far from universal.

Most of what people know is nothing more than feminist lies and propaganda.
Property given to people out west in the US was given to the man if he was
married. But single females could get land on their own. Not many single
females except the most masculine types could take the rigors of being a
pioneer. Married people were viewed as a unit. If the husband died the wife
would inherit the property and she could will it to whoever she chose.
People were viewed as family units in the Homestead days and if you allowed
married females property it would mean that that family got twice as much
land.
