CBS sending Couric to Iraq, Syria
'Evening News' anchor sets Mideast trip

A more truthful identification would have been
to refer to Ms. ThePerkyKatie-Couric as "star"
instead of "anchor".
IMO, the six o'clock headline services of the
broadcast networks can only regain what credibility
remains available to them by (a) understanding that
their on-air behind-the-desk "talent" are no more
than news readers, (b) admitting their institutional
biases and (c) losing the puff pieces.
Ms. ThePerkyKatie-Couric undermines CBS in
all three of those areas.
Get ready for Katie Couric -- Phase II.
I will redouble my efforts to ignore her.

One year after Couric jumped from NBC's "Today"
to CBS in a big-money talent deal, the "Evening News"
anchor is embarking on a high-risk tour of Iraq
and Syria to revive the broadcast.
Hmmm. This is sooooo much a repeat of the now-
discredited Dan RaTHer's trip to Afghanistan during
its occupation by Russia. Odd that there was no mention
of "Gunga Dan" in that showbiz rag's article.
Announcement comes just days after an Iraqi translator
working for CBS was killed in Baghdad. CBS said
Monday the translator had been found dead following
his abduction just hours after leaving work at CBS
News' Baghdad bureau.
Oooh! A jep show. That'll lure in the wimmins for sure.
There's no downside for CBS here at all.
Ms. ThePerkyKatie-Couric wanders Big Bad Iraq
for a couple of weeks in a made-for-television-movie
Woman in Jeopardy (jep) script. When she returns
to the USA, she goes on the interview circuit and that
will be good for a couple more weeks of publicity
and celebrity attention for her show.
If she gets herself kidnapped, the ratings will only
shoot skyward as the CBS network milks that
story for all it's worth. The biggest upside will be
if CBS gets a successful _Nightline_ clone out
of months and months of Katie In Kaptivity coverage.
Color me cynical.
[...] Couric's jump to CBS last September was
designed to elevate CBS from worst to first
in the news ratings. But after an initial surge,
ratings have fallen to below the previous year
when Bob Schieffer was acting as interim anchor,
dashing hopes that her substantial "Today"
following would follow her to the Eye.
Excuse me while I join my friends for a well-earned
gloating session.
Friends, on the count of three -- 1, 2, 3: "CBS, we told you so!"

Along the way, ABC's Charles Gibson has been
the beneficiary, moving ahead of NBC's Brian Williams
in the ratings.
Ironic isn't it that ABC is winning against Ms. ThePerkyKatie-
Couric with someone plucked from ABC's clone of the morning
newsy chit-chat/girl-talk/recipes show that Ms. Perky made
her career on. Heh heh.
I'm hoping that the sinking of the CBS anchor-girl
is an omen of the trajectory of the hillary for
girl-president campaign.
