If one is unable to overcome one's desires, then perhaps not.

Indeed, and whats rather telling with this thread is that its starting
ASSumption was that ONLY men need to control their desires.

(Denise) I think that the general perception is that women have an
easier time with abstinence than men.

So ? As we know here, many " general perceptions " are WRONG.

(Denise) Do you believe that THIS general perception is wrong?

GROSSLY so. Note that female expressions of sexuality are NEVER
dissed as being " excessive ", even though so many of them go *much
farther* than those of boys and men.

Recall the quote that is often posted here to the effect that many
people titter over how often *it is said* that men think about sex,
but no one stops to consider how often women think about being
" sexy ". The whole cosmetics industry, and not a small part of the
cosmetic surgery industry, exist solely to support the latter type
of excessive female behavior.

Do you believe that men CAN overcome their sexual desires and live
happily celibate lives?

Thats UNNATURAL. As long as you keep flogging this man HATING
turn-them-into-women IDIOCY, you PROVE that not only do you NOT
know a thing about men, but that you DO have the same view of men
as Parg: That men can ONLY be " good " *the more that men become
feminised*.

Thats... EVIL.

I'd be interested to learn what you think are
the keys to men being both abstinent and comfortable.

As I am NOT a man hating IDIOT, I hold no such absurd view.

Lets discuss women becoming *shopping-celibate*. Not LESS
shopping, NO shopping at all !

Find me a representative number of women who will approve of
that ! Until then, cease your man hating MSunderstanding
IDIOCY of trying to turn men INTO women-with-penises.

You ARE trying to essentially GELD men. Thats NOT being
" man friendly ", thats totally man HOSTILE. Period.

Let us know when women stop outshopping men 6 to 1...

That may well be wrong and it's
quite possible that women find sexual abstinence equally difficult --
or easy depending on your POV. However, since this is a men's ng, I
put out the question here about men controllign their sexual desires.

And, it remains a *stoopid* " question ". As well as a sexist
misandrist WomenFirster one...

Since it is a well proven fact that WOMEN spend 85% of all
discretionary money spent, perhaps its women who need a bit
of self control in that area ?

(Denise) Yes.

So, write about THAT.

(Denise) There's an idea.

DUH !

I would offer up Bill Maher's segment in one of his DVDs,
Victory Begins At Home, of " We Can Do Without It ",
where he explains about Blood Diamonds and how some
kids have one or two arms hacked off if they do not dig
to supply the militias with their products.

He explains that he told a woman friend about all this,
that she is one of the smartest people that he knows, and
her response, in terms of the arms hacked off bit, was:

" *Both* arms ? " As if one arm, well thats OK to get her
her shiny thing.

If one is able to, then of course it adds to personal clarity. It's
not just the physical act of sex itself. It is everything that goes
along with it. Finding and maintaining a relationship consumes a vast
amount of personal resources. It's not just a matter of redirecting
the sex drive itself, it's an entire repurposing of huge amounts of
time and energy. It's not the life for me, but I have a tremendous
amount of respect for monks and nuns.

One could then say the same about people who dedicate their
lives to the pursuit of scientific knowledge. Certainly, spending
months in the ISS, or on a Chilean mountaintop cannot be all
that much fun for homebodies.
