Hmmm, and I don't recall any feminists mocking the character
of Gracie Burns even tho' _that_ character portrays just the
sort of woman-child that feminists claim so offends them.
Why not?
(Denise) Interesting that you bring up George Burns and Gracie Allen
(like many showbiz women, she continued using her birth name after
marriage). I happen to be something of a fan. I used to have a
cassette of a couple of their radio programs. The programs were very
funny largely because Gracie, with her birdlike voice, was so
wonderfully and endearingly scatter-brained. Her persona was more
than just silly as she often had her own peculiar logic. They were an
absolutely wonderful team. In reality, Gracie was a very smart lady.
At one point, she made a gag run for the Presidency on the Surprise
Party ticket. She claimed her gender was an asset as "everyone knows
that women are better than men at introducing bills into the house."
In some places, Gracie Allen got a few write-in votes.
