It doesn't surprise me. There's no stronger force in nature than the
desire to have and assure the well-being of one's own offspring. It's
something that most species are willing to die for, and that some
species are guaranteed to die for.

A salmon leaves the ocean, fights her way upriver, lays eggs, and
dies. A male Mantis mates, knowing he'll probably be lunch for the
female, too. There's a spider that lays her eggs and then allows her
hatchlings to eat her alive.

Are you sure that there isn't a young child out there that you'd be
willing to commit suicide for?

Suicide isn't appealing. But I'd certainly die to save my wife, or
either of my daughters it that were the only choice.

Don't toy with me. Are you or are you not willing to immolate
yourself?

I think it's clear, GA, (unless I'm mistaken) than John has answered
that he's willing to do so by saying he'd be willing to die for his
wife and children.

That's not good enough. He might never be called upon to do so. I'm
trying to find out if there are other incentives that might be offered
to him as an inducement.

That said, of course, women's maternity instincts in our culture could
certainly use some "fine tuning" considering how they're likely to
become unwed mothers, have children into poverty, engage in dangerous
lifestyles when their children are involved, etc.

Back to John: I certainly would put my life on the line for my wife
BUT... I expect recognition and respect for that role. Our culture
treats men as if they're supposed to do this for women as an
entitlement.

Most married men would probably put their lives on the line for their
wives and family, if called upon to do so. These would include
married men that Larkin dismisses as beneath him.

However, Larkin firmly believes with every fiber of his being (unless
he's just engaging in some sort of ploy) that men are somehow "worse"
than women and therefore ARE required to make this sacrifice without
the concomitant receipt of recognition and respect.

Not a bit. It's not about "recognition and respect", it's about doing
what you feel is right.

Larkin believes that women are "better" than men and that male self-
sacrifice IS an entitlement for women.

Wrong again. Some women are better than some men, and vice versa.
Sorry to inform you: Sex doesn't determine character.

Larkin is positive DISPROOF of Puke's oft-repeated statement that "the
slave will never love the master". Larkin loves his indentured
servitude just fine, and his peculiar definition of the concept of
"manliness" is the love of indentured servitude.

You assume that men who like women are somehow enslaved. I assume that
men who hate women are sadly, terribly torn and damaged.
