I don't agree with your premise, Mark. Dating and who pays does
If you want to try to believe that, go on and try.
I don't need to "try" ; most people...normal folks everywhere, think
dating is fine and that who pays for the date does not signify buying
a person.
To paraphrase
Groucho Marx: We've already established what you are, (ok, WERE),
now
we're just haggling over price and terms.
That was George Bernard Shaw.
John
So Groucho never said it?
Apparently not. After doing a Google search I found many people who,
like you, believe Groucho said it but after searching extensively on
Groucho Marx Quotation web sites, I found no instance of him
documented as having used that specific quote.
I don't mean to discount GBS's genius in saying it first, but I kind
of
love the way that Groucho said it.
In which movie do you recall him saying it?
First in answer to your question: I seem to recall him saying it on his radio or TV show but I'm honestly not sure.
That was before my time. I did get to see him on the telly.
Yes, memories can be funny things. I could have sworn Mary Tyler Moore was engaged to Ted Bessell in the last year of her show but
Andre insisted I was wrong. I readily admitted to Andre that my memory could be wrong and then afterwards I did some Googling on the
topic and it turns out my memory was wrong and Andre was indeed
correct.
After googling around a bit, I didn't find it attributed to him (but
neither did I find any documented evidence he _didn't_ say it.)
Cute but the absence of proof is not proof.
Agreed. But it's also not proof of my being mistaken either, yes?
It's a good time to pause here, Jill, and reflect that while soc.men is
a wonderfully emotionally active forum, people sometimes get bent out of
shape unnecessarily. I was initially just going to ignore John's
comment but thought I'd have a bit-o-fun and ask him how he knew Groucho
never said it.
Hell, for that matter, John didn't even bother to show how or when GBS
supposedly said it! For all we know, John is mistaken!
But I've discovered this cool new thing called "google." You should
try it some time.
But actually, I knew it was GBS before Al Gore even invented the internet.
I'm impressed! Not with your knowledge or intelligence (you still haven't actually provided any citation or other evidence that GBS said> such a thing or that Groucho Marx didn't), but rather with your
arrogance to claim that other mere mortals should do your supposedly
easy work for you.
Indeed. :-) But no matter who said it, it still doesn't apply to
dating. :-)
Nice try.
Philosophically, I disagree with you because I discovered that admitting
to mistakes, especially honest ones, without first putting up a fight
and demanding the other person proves their case quickly causes the
public to lose confidence in that person and "street cred". It's part
of the problem of men being chivalrous and bending over backwards to be
nice to the ladies that they are treated with such contempt today.
I thought both of you were NOT "ladies"? So chivalry has little to do
with proving ones point or acknowledging a mistake. It would seem to
have more to do with courtesy.
Nobody treats me with contempt. I wonder why they do that to you.
Nor me. I suspect that boorish behavior gets boorish responses IRL.
I write controversial ideas and take risks.
There's nothing "controversial" about bigotry these days; you either
are one or you're not and folks are either going to join you in your
bigotry or ignore you, which is probably why Mark actually DID have to
buy a wife.
