If you want to try to believe that, go on and try. To paraphrase
Groucho Marx: We've already established what you are, (ok, WERE), now
we're just haggling over price and terms.
That was George Bernard Shaw.
John
So Groucho never said it?
Apparently not. After doing a Google search I found many people who,
like you, believe Groucho said it but after searching extensively on
Groucho Marx Quotation web sites, I found no instance of him
documented as having used that specific quote.
I don't mean to discount GBS's genius in saying it first, but I kind of
love the way that Groucho said it.
In which movie do you recall him saying it?
First in answer to your question: I seem to recall him saying it on his
radio or TV show but I'm honestly not sure.
Yes, memories can be funny things. I could have sworn Mary Tyler
Moore was engaged to Ted Bessell in the last year of her show but
Andre insisted I was wrong. I readily admitted to Andre that my
memory could be wrong and then afterwards I did some Googling on the
topic and it turns out my memory was wrong and Andre was indeed
correct.
After googling around a bit, I didn't find it attributed to him (but
neither did I find any documented evidence he _didn't_ say it.)
Cute but the absence of proof is not proof.
Agreed. But it's also not proof of my being mistaken either, yes?
It's a good time to pause here, Jill, and reflect that while soc.men is
a wonderfully emotionally active forum, people sometimes get bent out of
shape unnecessarily. I was initially just going to ignore John's
comment but thought I'd have a bit-o-fun and ask him how he knew Groucho
never said it.
Hell, for that matter, John didn't even bother to show how or when GBS
supposedly said it! For all we know, John is mistaken!
Various web pages attribute the quote or story to Mark Twain, Winston
Churchill, AND GBS.
This only proves that some quotes are misattributed. It doesn't back
your contention that Groucho ever said it or possibly could have said
it.
How does it? You know, it is possible for all 4 historical figures in
question to have said it.
You might be surprised to know that all of them probably said "Good
morning" too. How about that? :-)
Essentially, all four of these men carry their own style that suggests
they could have made such a quip.
Tommy Parish in my 8th grade class carried his own style suggesting he
could have said it but that doesn't mean he did either.
But if you said he did and you had an honest recollection or reason for
saying so, why not? Why should anyone get bent out of shape if you
cited Tommy Parish instead of GBS?
Note: I never said GBS didn't say it.
Quite frankly, this whole thread is reminding me of spelling flames
where are usually indicative of someone who doesn't have a thoughtful,
creative point looking for something simple to snipe at.
Free Hint: It might have been better if you'd just admitted you made
a mistake in the first place.
Very well:
I admit that I made the mistake by citing Groucho Marx as saying
something that nobody has proven he didn't say (even thought many people
think he did) in leau of someone's claim that George Bernard Shaw said
something which nobody has provided any evidence for.
In advance, let me admit I'm mistaken about the fine weather today in
Northern Virgina today since the weather is bad elsewhere and a month
from now I'm not going to know otherwise. :-)
It would have furthered your general
credibility here rather than detracting from it.
Hahahahaha! I'm flattered that anyone thinks I have credibility here.
:-) I'm touched Jill. By the same token, you have 'cred' too even if I
think you've going a bit over the top here and being unfair to me.
There is no shame in
making an honest mistake or in admitting to it.
Apparently you aren't so good at talking your way out of a speeding
ticket. :-) (I'm reminded of liar liar)
Philosophically, I disagree with you because I discovered that admitting
to mistakes, especially honest ones, without first putting up a fight
and demanding the other person proves their case quickly causes the
public to lose confidence in that person and "street cred". It's part
of the problem of men being chivalrous and bending over backwards to be
nice to the ladies that they are treated with such contempt today.

(This sub-thread reminds me of flame wars which often focus on what _I_
said! :-)
That's nice.
Sheesh! You are certainly a woman Jill: No humor whatsoever.
However, just to clarify, what this sub-thread is about
is the fact that you were wrong about the quote and while making lots
of useless excuses you still refuse to admit you were wrong which
means you'll likely make the same mistake another day. :-)
For all we know, this John guy picked up mistaken information about
George Bernard Shaw from some other do-gooder and passed it along.
Hell, that proves my point: You're more likely to trust John guy than me
even thought both of us haven't backed up our claims because he was
taking the position of correcting someone else.
Have you admitted you're wrong yet? (If you want to establish honest
credentials you really ought to do so. Unless you want to continue
making up lots of excuses...
regards,
PolishKnight
