Mass. Shared Parenting Bill has 40 co-sponsors

John Maguire's March 10, 2007 column in
_The Lowell Sun_ urges Massachusetts
state legislators to support the shared parenting
bill authored by Colleen M. Garry (D-Dracut).
The bill has 40 co-sponsors and is expected
to come before the legislature for floor debate
soon.
Mr. Maguire urges legislators to "please do
this easy homework" of researching the need
for this bill and "[w]alk down the marble stairways,
over to the cineplex, and watch _The Pursuit
of Happyness_."
Contrary to the myth that dads divorce moms
to capture sexy young things, most divorced
fathers are really in love with their children
but have divorce thrust upon them.
The mother exits, takes the child
and leaves dad in a shattered world.
...
And many have it worse than Chris Gardner
[the protagonist of the movie _The Pursuit
of Happyness_] did. The real Chris Gardner
story happened in 1981. Back then, a single
father had a chance. The workplace might have
been tough, but at least the huge anti-father
bureaucracies were still over the horizon.
"Support shared-parenting option"

John Maguire goes on to decry the "Mike Nifong
morality" of judges and other so-called family
court (it should be called "anti-family court,"
that name would be more accurate). Nifong is
the notorious prosecutor who bent over backwards
to uncritically -- perhaps even cynically -- swallow
whatever he was fed by a woman who told a story
of being raped, a story that was pretty easily seen
as a lie. But the lie was being told by a female
so Nifong charged off to play the role of Knight
in Shining Armor rescuing the damsel (pretending
to be) in distress. The same rescue-the-helpless-
female idiocy plagues the anti-family court legal
machinery and Maguire summarizes its evils well.
The shared parenting bill John Maguire urges
legislators to support and pass might do away
with the worst behaviors of anti-family courts,
behaviors usually instigated by spiteful women.
While not the best solution to the problem of
marriages being murdered on the whim of one
parent (almost always the woman) and certainly
not as good as father-only custody would be,
the reforms proposed by legislator Garry will
also lead to a beneficial reduction of the number
of divorces filed in the first place because when
women discover that children aren't their private
property to take away from a marriage, they are
more likely to decide to resist divorce-on-a-whim.
