What is the turnaround time for actually seeing the new newsgroup, on news
servers or on Google?

It depends on the news server. Supernews is already carrying it.

I've just approved your "welcome" post, but I don't know if we have an
outgoing feed yet. Let me know if/when it appears.

Since I'm not sure that posts will appear, I'll post this draft FAQ
entry here. Note that this is subject to changes and improvements by
the moderation team or the users of the group. It may also be rather
complicated for inexperienced computer users. But it addresses a
problem that people who might want to read the "official", moderated
version of the group might experience.

Q. I'm seeing a lot of off-topic posts, including crossposts. What
should I do?

A. For various reasons, some news servers may have created
soc.men.moderated as an unmoderated group. If you post to the
unmoderated version of the group, not only will you see posts that
haven't been approved by the moderators, but your own posts won't be
visible to readers of the moderated version.

To check whether the group is moderated or not on your server, you can
follow these instructions.

1. Send an on-topic post to the newsgroup. If it appears without an
"Approved" header, the group is unmoderated on your news server.
Either jump to step 4, or continue testing, as follows.

2. Open a command prompt. On most versions of Microsoft Windows, the
command prompt is in Start / Programs / Accessories. On other
operating systems it will be somewhere else.

3. Telnet to your news server by typing these commands:

telnet [server] 119

Replace [server] with your news server's name, e.g.
news.myisp.com. 119 is the standard port number for Usenet; if
you use a different port number for ordinary connections to
your news server, use it here too.

You should see a banner containing some information about the
server.

authinfo user [username]
authinfo pass [password]

Replace [username] and [password] with the appropriate details
for your news account. If you don't use a username and password
to read news, omit these two commands.

list active soc.men.moderated

If no output appears, the group doesn't exist on this server.

If the group exists, the line will end with m, n or y:

m means that the group is set up as moderated. You don't need
to do anything else.

n means that no posting is allowed - this is possible if the
server carries read-only groups.

y means that the group exists but is unmoderated.

quit

Repeat for each news server on which you have an account. Note that
some versions of telnet may not display the commands on the screen as
you type them.

4. If the group doesn't exist or is unmoderated, you should email your
news admin requesting that the group be added or its status changed. I
suggest referring to the official control message, which is archived
here: <ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/soc/soc.men.moderated.gz>.
(Note that the usual attacks on news.groups have caused a few previous
unofficial control messages to be archived.)

5. Wait and see what happens.

If you have any problems, please let us know.
