Dear soc.men techies,

I'm having a terrible problem with my mIRC and connecting to my
lifeline "retardtraffic", the Phil Hendrie fan show site. Phil's
comedy is like a drug and I'm not getting my fix.

Here's the problem. I get an "unable to connect" message when I try to
connect to the server "portalx.org" but can connect to other servers.
When I do finally connect to a server and get on "retardtraffic" I'm
the only one in the room with an "@" sign in front of my name. There's
no "@" sing in front of my name when things were working and others
were in the room, with the "@" sign folks being the ones doling out the
files.

Any ideas?

Sorry, Tom. I used to spend a lot of time on mIRC about 10 years ago
but I can't help with the "unable to connect" message.

I can however help with what happens when you are alone in a channel
(rooms are on AOL and AOL is for losers).

The @ in front of your name means you are the operator in the channel
(room) by default because no one else is there. It means you control
the Title/Subject of the channel, you control how many people the
channel will allow in, you control whether to make the channel secret
or not, you can ban who ever you want to and you can also give Ops
(Operater) priviledges to others who come into the channel.

What I think may be happening is you are using an alternate network
connection to connect and your old channel (room) is not on that
network so when you enter the name you are familiar with your are in
fact creating a channel by that name on this other network.

You need to find a connection that puts you back on the network you
are used to using. IIRC there is a long string of network connections
available to use...you just have to keep clicking on them one by one
till you get one that gets you to your home channel (room).

I get it, thanks Jill. The trouble is I can't get on the old server
for some reason. I'll keep in trying to find a solution to that. At
least you helped narrow down the problem.

Limewire is helping my problem alot though. To think all this wonder
will be shut down someday.
