Which "right wing" dictatorship were they living under? Was Saddam
Heissein's secularism "right wing"? Could you care to give
us a definition of a "right" wing regime?

Saddam's reign was right wing authoritarian:

"A more obscure strand of right wing thought, often associated with the
original right wing from the times of monarchy, supports the preservation of
wealth and power in the hands that have traditionally held them, social
stability, and national solidarity and ambition."

You can't deny that Saddam concentrated wealth, ie. numerous palaces,
financial goodies to close insider supporters. He insisted on social
stability by vanquishing all dissent. His efforts included promotion of
national solidarity. Plus, he was ambitious. He wanted to expand into
neighbouring territories.

His politics were also peppered with a type of Arab socialism which is not
the same as Marxism.

Well, in any case, we've got conservative feminists prepared to teach Iraqi
women all about democracy and political action. And despite Iraqi women
having enjoyed considerable more freedom under Saddam's regime than anywhere
else in the Arab world, they still pretty much held to traditional values.
Note that conservative feminists also juggle home and work. These two
groups of women have much in common.

So, I think it is well and good that these conservative feminists spend
their efforts in helping Iraqi women become political. And once these women
are better positioned politically-wise, even though they may be conservative
right-wingers, other women seeing them active will accept the fact that it's
o.k. to be political. Any leftist feminists can then begin to spend their
money promoting leftist causes. ;-)
