Administration Chooses Anti-Feminist Group to Train Iraqi Women

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct 5 (OneWorld) The State Department has awarded an
explicitly anti-feminist U.S. group part of a US$10 million grant to
train Iraqi women in political participation and democracy.

The group, the Washington-based Independent Women's Forum (IWF), will
help implement the administration's "Iraqi Women's Democracy
Initiative," along with a number of other groups that, unlike the
IWF, have experience in international exchange and democracy-promotion
activities, including the Meridian International Center, the
International Republican Institute (IRI), and the National Democratic
Institute (NDI).

Quite frankly, I don't see a problem with this. Iraqi women are very
familiar with right-wing politics. They lived under a right-wing
dictatorship. So, if these right-wing feminist organizations wish to train
Iraqi women to become much more politically active and wish to train them
regarding the democratic process, starting them off with democratic
right-wing politics may indeed be the best way to begin. Left-wing
feminists may not receive as welcoming a reception as these right-wing
feminists will get. Left-wing feminists could be viewed way too radical for
present day Iraqi women.

The main point is to get Iraqi women politically involved. And this is what
right-wing feminists intend to do. Once these Iraqi women are comfortable
being politically minded and involved, then upcoming politically active
Iraqi women can steer the democratic process towards a more centrist and
moderate agenda if this is what they want.

So, by all means, spend those 10 million dollars educating and encouraging
Iraqi women to be politically involved. This merely means that left-wing
feminists can save themselves the time, expense and trouble. ;-)
