That
is a while ago so let's double the prioce to cater for inflation. £20 a
shag.

Hello Heidi! Happy Valentines.

And a Happy Valentines to you, too. ;-) I hope yours was a cuddly and

How do you know about the pricing structure for Guatamalian whores? :-)

A friend of mine cut his trip to Guatamala short. He was constantly
bombarded by fathers trying to sell their little 10 and 12 year old girls as
sex-providers. This kind of behavior sickened him so much that if he had
stayed for his full duration of that vacation he would have risked murdering
one of these men. He didn't particularly relish the thought of languishing
in a Guatamalian jail. Instead, he thought to himself, "Na...better to
just go home." He had planned to stay for 2 weeks, but after 3 days of
being down there, he packed up and came home.

Housekeepers are hard to find. The demand is so high that they can
command
$35.00 per hour. And even at that rate they have to turn down customers
because there simply aren't enough days in the week to accommodate the
clients. Housekeepers have long waiting lists. I kid you not. Check
out
the yellow pages and make a few phone calls for a cleaning lady to come
in
once a week. The costs will surprise you.

Did you ever hear of craigslist?

This doesn't make any sense (it's not the first thing you've written
that
falls under that classification). If cleaning paid $35 an hour, more
than
many teachers make, the market would be flooded with people wanting
to clean homes and pounding door to door looking for this work.

I suspect you're talking about licensed and bonded services which
have a lot of overhead.

A friend of mine set up herself as a licensed and bonded services. Instead
of working for Molly Maid, or some such, and only earning $8.00 to $10.00
per hour with the rest going to the owner of that business, she created a
business of her own as a sole proprietorship.

She uses her own vehicle, buys cleaning supplies wholesale, has space set
aside at home for an office. She has decided she will only clean two houses
per day so that she can accomodate her family life. She cleans one house
for 2 hours in the morning and another house for 2 hours in the afternoon.
She meets her children for lunch, is available to pick them up from school
and take them to soccer practises and games. She charges $35.00 per hour,
has 10 clients and has six on a waiting list. She gets $140.00 CASH each
and everyday for 5 days per week.

From her income, she can reduce the taxes payable in ways that wage earners
cannot do. For example, she can deduct 10% off her property taxes to claim
as a business expense. She can also claim 10% off the interest of any
mortgage on the house. (Here in Canada mortage interest is not tax
deductible.) She can claim most if not all of her expenses for her vehicles
which she uses for both business and private, plus 10% off her
hydro-electric power that she used to heat and light her home.

As that proprietor of her own cleaning business where she is that sole
"employee", she gets to set her prices to whatever the market will bear.
She has discovered that people will pay that $35.00 per hour. She also gets
to keep more of her earnings than if she were an employee for some other
company. And as it is, demands for her services are there...women who work
outside of the home...and in Canada that is 85% of the women, many of them
want house cleaners, but can't get them. It's unlikely that she'll ever run
out of potential clients!

She could also "test" the market to see if anyone will be prepared to pay
$50.00 per hour. It may well be that some women will pay another woman
$100.00 per week to vacuum, dust, and clean the bathrooms. It all depends
on what some of these working women will feel is worthwhile and whether or
not their own wages can support paying someone else $400.00 per month.

So, why are not more women doing what this friend of mine is doing?
Well...not everyone likes to do housework. I sure as heck don't! But, I
don't hate it enough to actually pay someone else to clean the house for me.
;-)

In any case, should I ever find myself in dire straights, I would certainly
consider setting myself up as that house cleaning business. I'd never work
for another cleaning company, though. It's easy enough to set yourself up
as a business and find your own clients. The demand is out there...at least
it is here in my area. I could also set myself up as a day-care provider.
It's easy enough to get that license, bonding and screening done. I could
choose to care for 5 children in my own home and make a livable wage off of
that service. But, again, this is not the kind of work I particularly care
for. I could do it if I had no other choice. Thank goodness I do have
choices other than cleaning house and caring for children! ;-)
